Chris kept his hand over D.J.'s mouth until the tension in her eyes ebbed, then flowed away. The readiness of her body, the fight-or-flight reflex, had passed the second he'd whispered in her ear. But the wariness took longer to leave her. Though she wasn't terrified of him, his presence didn't soothe away her fears as her presence soothed away his.
